Canadian Highland Cattle Painting

$ 658.00 $ 588.00

“Angus Cattle” They Water at Dusk. c. 1890’s.  Older Oil on Board set in a later stylized 1920’s frame. In ‘as found’ condition and ripe for some tender restoration. A highly undervalued and under-appreciated work of which for the moment remains unattributed.

Characterful old oil painting depicting a somewhat typical romanticised image of Canada in the mid-1800’s. Though this quaint little piece has suffered perhaps from some overenthusiastic restoration, we are assured that the majority of it’s former majesty can be rectified once a degree of tender love, attention and enthusiasm have been applied. While the painting is perhaps representative of ‘a romanticized idyll’ of the nineteenth century it is easy to see how early immigrants yearned to remain in contact (albeit in an emotional sense) for their original rustic roots; be they Ireland, Scotland or even the harsh windswept hills of wales. Note: the choice of colours selected for the hillsides and skyline is so very typical of a sunset seemingly typically found in the more northern reaches of Canada’s provinces and territories.
